After all, singing, when you think about it, is a basic facet of most cultures on this planet. It is fundamental to our way of life. Many of us are pushed to sing, often at special occassions, most commonly around the birthday cake, when the poorest and least confident of person will make some attempt to sing. The truth is; most people can sing quite well if given the right encouragement and a few basic tools to help them progress. The fundamentals of good singing technique are quite easy to understand and can be learned by almost anyone with simply the desire to improve themselves. There is no reason to be one of those people who have rotten fruit thrown at them when they sing!
Singing is one of life's real joys and can be the source of immense pleasure and satisfaction for singer and listener alike. With the popularity of shows such as X Factor around, more and more people are giving it a shot. However, it seems to me that the vast majority don't consider for one minute that singing incorrectly can in fact cause long term damage to your voice. So if you want to sing, where should you start?
Well, first of all, you must understand that the voice is a natural, acoustic instrument. There is a correct, natural and safe way to sing, but unfortunately many many ways you should not sing. If you are trying to teach yourself to sing, the likelihood is that you will experiment with a number of these incorrect and potentially harmful methods. You can in fact cause damage to your voice by singing incorrectly over long periods of time.
For many people, learning to sing can be incredibly frustrating. It is rare to find somebody who naturally knows how to sing correctly. It is therefore paramount that you obtain quality, proven teaching materials when you begin so that you set off in the right direction. Undoing bad habits later is difficult to do.
If you have a little more money at your disposal, finding a good singing teacher is invaluable. Unfortunately there are many people that say they teach singing but really aren't qualified to do so. When choosing a teacher, find out as much about them as you can and try and get recommendations from other singers. Does your teacher have a proven history of singing performance? Do they teach not just by lecturing you and showing you diagrams, but by demonstration and a highly hands-on approach?
As a guide, when you start singing you should start by understanding the human anatomy in relation to the singing voice, learn correct breathing techniques and exercises using your diaphragm and the correct production of the vowel sounds. If you don't understand and practice these elements fully and be totally relaxed and confident whilst doing so, it is not a good idea to try and progress any further. You will simply introduce tension into your muscles, start shallow breathing and push and squeeze your voice out. Falling into these traps is not healthy and will not make you a good singer.
Singing is all about a harmonious balance of a number of elements of your body; correct stance, relaxation, correct breathing, tone production, tone placement and resonance. The best way to obtain this balance is to learn the elements step-by-step and in the correct manner. It might seem laborious. You probably want to jump straight in and start singing your favourite songs. But seriously, the methodical approach is the quickest and safest way to learn to sing. With good training materials and a good teacher, it can also be a very enjoyable and rewarding journey.

With the right tuition techniques, you would know after the first day of how your voice felt that you were on the right track. With the right training, your voice will amplify in range by as much as five notes in the first day of correct use of performance.
Pay attention to the following free singing tips:
1. Let your arms rest slightly form your sides. Clutch your hands out in front of you or get your arms to your sides and a bit in to the front. Raise them about 6 inches in a bendy, comfortable style. This will allow your ribcage to fully expand and your lungs to fill up to their full capacity. More air permits you to project your voice with greater power and clarity.
2. Stand with feet about the width of your shoulders and if you prefer, one foot can be slightly in front if the other. Make sure you're soundly balanced. Somewhat bend your knees. If you sing while seated, make certain both feet are level on the floor and that you're sitting up straight, but not laboriously.
3. Its paramount that you relax thoroughly! If you tense up then your tone will be utterly ruined. Let your shoulders relax. Keep your neck relaxed. Don't compel your chest to expand out and up when you inhale. This will actually constrict your airflow. This will relax your body and your tone will sound more natural. Try quietly swaying from side to side with the beat. You'll look better, too!
4. When you breathe in, thrust your abdomen out. This will allow additional air to totally fill up your lungs. As you breathe out, fetch your stomach gradually in, using the strength of your diaphragm (which is just beneath your ribcage) to direct your notes.
5. If you have to punch out a high note or you listen to yourself singing flat raise your arms a slightly higher and smile slightly. When hitting very high annotations, try closing your eyes and turning your expression up somewhat.
6. Conversely, if you start to sing sharp (a tiny bit too high), bring your arms down a little lower and open your mouth slightly wider by dropping your lower jaw. Don't dip your chin towards your neck, however, as this will cause your air flow to become constricted, which will show up in your voice.
7. Enjoy yourself! If you take all these tips to heart, singing could become a habit. :)
