Mobile Phone Health Risk

In recent years mobile phones have been seen as a health risk. As we have already said, mobile phones are no more than sophisticated and complex radios. Though, to be more precise, mobile phones can be perceived as low-power mono-channel radio technologies.

When you converse on your mobile telephone, you are in fact chatting to a base station in close proximity. Mobile phone base-stations operating on low power; can be referred to as multi-channel and two-way radios. Their purpose is to transmit your telephone call into the standard land-line handset system this is turn allows you to begin talking with the individual called.

Currently, since mobile phones plus the base stations are two-way radios, a frequency (RF), energy is generated - this is what is used for communication. Of course the people standing near them will be exposed to the RF power. However, both the mobile phones, together with the base station are low energy, which means they merely exhibit short range energies, RF power contact levels are usually extreemly low.

The scientific community in both the USA and around the world are in almost total agreement that power from mobile telephone base station antenna is much too low and health hazards are unlikely if people maintain some distance from direct contact to the antenna, they are secure from any apparent health risk.

The consequences of radiation emissions from mobile phones could place mobile users at risk of certain brain conditions. The possible complaints could include Alzheimer's Disease, according to new reports.

Researchers in Sweden have found that just two minutes' exposure to energy waves from a handset can disable a defence mechanism in the body designed to prevent harmful proteins and toxins in the blood from entering the brain.

In what is the latest in a series of mobile phone health scares, once the proteins enter brain tissue there is a higher risk of brain and nerve diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis developing.

The World Health Organization has concluded that serious health effects (e.g. cancer) are very unlikely to be caused by cellular phones or their base stations[5][6], and expects to make recommendations about mobile phones in 2007–08.

However, some National Radiation Protection Authorities, i.e. Austria[1] Germany[2] and Sweden,[3] recommend their citizens to minimize radiation.

Here are some recommendations to improve your mobile phone use:

  • Use hands-free to decrease the radiation to the head
  • Keep the mobile phone away from the body
  • Do not telephone in a car without an external antenna.
